Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks said 13-liter engines have become the number one choice of U.S. Class 8 truck customers, and that they sell more 13-liters than any other company.
Mack also said it was the top seller of 11-liter engines in the United States.
The two companies, both based in Greensboro, N.C., are units of Swedish-based global manufacturer Volvo AB.
“For the first time, 13-liter engines have become the number one choice of U.S. Class 8 truck customers, and no one sells more 13-liter engines — or 11-liter engines — in the U.S. than the Volvo Group, Volvo’s statement said.
“The Mack MP7 engine is also the top-selling 11-liter engine in the U.S., Mack said.
Both companies said that data substantiating their statement came from R.L. Polk Co, which collects registration data on commercial vehicles and components.
“We’re seeing a shift in the market to less than 15-liter engines as customers increasingly focus on operational efficiency, said Kevin Flaherty, Mack’s senior vice president for the U.S. and Canada.
