Motorists Urged to Stay Off Road
Officials are warning that the snowstorm that disrupted travel across the south this weekend has turned into a powerful nor’easter that is bearing down on the Northeast.
Forecasters said the storm could dump between 9 inches and 18 inches of snow on New York, New Jersey and New England overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
“The heaviest corridor is going to be from northern New Jersey right up that I-95 corridor through Portland, Maine, Carl Erickson, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Penn., told Bloomberg.
Transportation officials are telling travelers including truck drivers to stay off the roads in advance of the storm.
“This is a major snow storm and it is important that the Connecticut Department of Transportation and emergency personnel be allowed to do their workâ€, said Mike Riley, president of the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut. “While some shipments might be of an essential or emergency nature, most freight can wait for a day.”
Erickson said that the storm will initially be just a snow event, but “as the storm bombs out off the New England coast the winds will pick up and basically create blizzard-like conditions.”
