Protesters on Wednesday night closed the Port of Oakland, the fifth-busiest U.S. container handling port, following a demonstration in the city, news reports said.
About 4,500 people from the Occupy Oakland movement assembled in a downtown plaza in the before marching through the streets to the port and shutting down operations.
“Operations are effectively shut down in the maritime area, said a port statement. The protest was peaceful, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Occupy Oakland, an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York Sept. 17 and spread to other cities, called for a general strike in the city, prompting hundreds of workers to stay home or leave their jobs early, Bloomberg reported.
